How the XYZ company wins the auction for the .car, .cars and .auto extensions?

The company XYZ created in 2015 by Daniel Negari, specializing in top level domain names and, more particularly, in the monopoly of the <.xyz> extension, has had  great success since Google announced that it had reserved this extension for the company Alphabet.

The requests for reservation of this extension have, indeed, tripled since this announcement. According to nTLD statistics, there are over 1 million domain names currently registered in .xyz. This represents 21% of the market for new extensions. The registration of a name in .xyz costs only 8 dollars per year.

The company XYZ has also recently won the auction that took place last July for the.car, .cars and .auto extensions. The ICANN has published the assignment agreements to this effect.

In fact, a partnership took place between Frank Schilling’s company UNR and the company XYZ to auction these three extensions. The company XYZ, thus, bought back the extensions of its partner through this auction. This was the first auction for new top-level domain extensions (new gTLDs).

The challenge is to ensure that companies can target a potential clientele and gain notoriety. In the era of an increasingly digitalized world, companies are recommended to use specific names linked to their business domains; this allows them to better rank their websites on search engines.

For the time being, this has not been successful, since according to new gTLDs statistics, the three extensions combined have less than 1,000 registrations. This can be explained by the relatively high price of $2,000 per year to register one of these extensions.

We will have to see in the long term,  whether these extensions will increase and whether this will have a real impact on the activities of the automotive companies.

The question remains as to whether this will generate a new optimization of the domain name extensions market. Indeed, Daniel Negari’s ambition will not end there, since he plans to launch several new extensions in 2021, including: .beauty, .hair, .skin, .makeup and .quest.
