AEO (answer engine optimization)
AEO (answer engine optimization)
Definition
AEO (answer engine optimization) is the practice of optimizing content for answer engines that return a direct response to a question rather than a list of links. It covers featured snippets, voice assistants (Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant) and generative AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini.
Why it matters
With the rise of conversational search and zero-click search, users expect instant answers. A brand that surfaces in those answers wins visibility and trust even without a click. It is also a brand protection issue: an inaccurate answer circulated about your name can hurt your reputation.
AEO best practices
- Structure content as clear question and answer pairs
- Use Schema.org markup (FAQPage, HowTo, Q&A)
- Write concise answers of 40 to 60 words
- Strengthen EEAT signals to be treated as a trusted source
- Keep information consistent across your site, social channels and directories
