Domain name management
Domain name management
Definition
Domain name management covers all operations across the lifecycle of a domain name: registration, renewal, transfer, DNS server changes, contact updates and surveillance of strategic extensions.
Why it is mission-critical
A lost domain means a downed website, interrupted emails and an immediate risk of cybersquatting. For an organisation holding dozens or hundreds of domains (brands, variants, geographic TLDs), spreading them across multiple registrars quickly becomes risky.
Recommended practices
- Concentrate all domains with a limited number of trusted registrars
- Enable registrar lock and strong authentication on every account
- Renew well in advance (1 to 5 years) and automate payments
- Document a domain policy: who owns what, and why
- Pair with trademark monitoring to spot abusive filings
- Use an IP management tool that brings trademarks and domains into a unified view
