Domain transfer
Domain transfer
Definition
Domain transfer is the operation of changing the registrar that manages your domain name, without changing the owner (the registrant stays the same). Not to be confused with an assignment (change of owner).
Why transfer
- Consolidate multiple registrars into one
- Improve security (stricter registrar)
- Get a better interface or a more mature API
- Cut long-term costs
Standard procedure (gTLD)
- Unlock the domain at the current registrar (lift the registrar lock)
- Obtain the authorisation code (auth code or EPP code)
- Start the transfer at the new registrar
- Confirm via email from the administrative WHOIS address
- Approval by the losing registrar (up to 5 days)
Watch points
- The domain must be registered for over 60 days to be transferable
- Transfer adds 1 year to the registration period (except premiums)
- Schedule outside critical periods to avoid downtime
- Coordinate with the overall domain management
