Registration

Registration

Definition

Registration is the final step that officially validates a trademark, patent or design with the competent office (INPI, EUIPO, WIPO, USPTO). It happens after examination of the application and, where applicable, after an opposition window has closed without a successful challenge.

What registration grants

  • An exclusive right of use in the designated territory
  • The standing to act against unauthorised use (counterfeiting)
  • A defined protection period (10 years for a trademark, 20 for a patent)
  • The ability to assign, license or pledge the right

Post-registration steps

  • Schedule renewal ahead of the cut-off date
  • Set up trademark monitoring to detect infringements
  • Ensure genuine use to avoid cancellation for non-use
  • Document and store proof of use
  • Centralise certificates and deadlines in an IP management tool
